If you want to provide value and consistency in your online business, you need to have a minimum of one main content platform that you publish for your audience. These main three are either a blog, video channel or podcast. But how do you know which one to choose?
All three are great for SEO and they all work for driving traffic. The biggest item to consider when choosing a platform is your target audience and what type of content your audience likes to consume.
Do they like to listen to a podcast in their car on their morning commute? Do they enjoy watching a video while cooking dinner? Or do they prefer to read a blog on their lunch hour? Their demographics can tell you a lot about which content platform is best.
Putting out content also needs to be FUN for you – because you won’t stick to a schedule of producing it if you dread creating it! Make sure the platform is something YOU enjoy, too. Let’s talk about the pros and cons of each for blogs, podcasts and videos – why it’s a good fit and why it’s not based on your personality.
You don't like spending hours at a computer writing
You find it hard to focus and structure your writing
Podcasts
It’s best fit for you if:
You love to interview and chat with people
You enjoy explaining things that are otherwise difficult to explain in writing
You enjoy writing scripts
You have the gift of the gab!
It’s probably not a good fit if:
Editing audio files and uploading to multiple podcast platforms is too technical for you
You read straight from scripts and don't use vocal effects, tones or personality in your speaking
The thought of hitting "record" makes you freeze up and redo multiple takes
Videos
It’s best fit for you if:
You have a natural, outgoing personality
You can easily speak without a script, but can stick to one if needed
You have photography or videography skills
You enjoy the editing and post-production process of creating and uploading videos
It’s probably not a good fit if:
You only read from the script and don't interject your personality
You can't commit to filming regularly for your viewers
You don't have good lighting, filming equipment or editing software. You don't need to spend a fortune, but you do need to consider investing some cash if you want to get serious!
You don't respond well to critiscim or negative comments (unfortunately they are more common when your face is in a video)
Final thoughts to consider
Find a balance of the content your audience likes to consume and the content you enjoy producing. Once you’ve mastered one type of content, consider adding an additional platform to your marketing mix and re-purposing the content for both. You can find out 20 ways to re-purpose content here.
